Slow Down & Enjoy Life

I have recently wanted to start a weekly blog series where I share my thoughts and experiences on different topics. I might be only 26 but I feel like I have a little bit of life experience that I can share and may benefit different people.

Plus at least this way I am at actually committing myself to get back to blogging to some kind of schedule again!

This week I want to talk about life and the checklist of things you are expected to have achieved by certain ages. I think there is a lot of pressure on people from a young age to know what they want from and in life. This expectation is continued throughout your life with the expectation you should have a career, settle down, get married, have children all by certain ages.

Before you are even 18 years old you are expected to know what career you want, and to select the relevant courses to enter onto that career path. It is a lot of pressure on someone at that age without all the other things that are going on in your life at that point.

I’ve learnt that it is okay not to have everything figured out. You do not need to put pressure on yourself to know exactly what you want to be doing. Yes it is good to have some idea, but things change and that is okay too.

You do not need to achieve certain milestones by a certain age just because society expects you to. You also do not need to do things in a certain order just because that is what society expects of you either. Do what feels right for you, at a speed that feels right for you.

One thing I have been guilty of up until a few years ago is trying to live life at 100 miles an hour. I wanted to tick every box, and fly through life without really experiencing anything. It is so important to slow down, and enjoy each stage of life as you move through it, you will only live that stage of your life once so make sure you are present.

Make sure you are doing what is right for you when it is right for you, not because it is what other people expect of you.

  • I definitely feel that pressure of having things “ticked off”. And it’s my 28th this Friday so I feel like there’s so much more I “should” have done by now. Trying to slow down and enjoy life as it is is something I’ve really been trying to work on!
